On Monday, March 4, student-employee residential advisers filed a petition asking the Bucknell administration to voluntarily recognize their union by this Friday, March 8. At the same time, they filed for recognition with the National Labor Relations Board, the federal body that adjudicates the National Labor Relations Act which guarantees all private sector employees their rights as workers including the right to organize and advocate for fair pay and working conditions, with or without a union. The Bucknell Residential Adviser Union is backed by 77% of residential advisers and supported by the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) Local 153.
AAUP Bucknell calls on the Bucknell administration …
…to voluntarily recognize the Bucknell Residential Adviser Union as the bargaining representative of residential advisers and to enter into contract negotiations without delay. In doing so, we remind the administration of the recent settlement of NLRB case 06-CA-318937.
AAUP Bucknell calls on all Bucknell employees …
… to cast their support behind the student-employee residential advisers who are seeking fair compensation for their work. Currently they are only compensated “in kind” by the cost of their housing, when this is but the necessary means to perform their work. For their essential work, union and non-union RAs at other universities receive housing, meal plans, and wages up to $5,000 per year.

Having one union in a workplace tends to improve the compensation of all employees in that workplace. After years of falling wages relative to inflation and the cost of living, it’s time for a change. Lend your support to our coworkers. In advocating for themselves, they are advocating for us all.
